Ballet Grades

Classical ballet is the foundation from which nearly all dance styles have developed, and it has a big influence on all genres of dance. Ballet is a holistic approach to life-long wellness for children and adults alike. It requires discipline and strong technique, athleticism, poise, balance, and precision. It demands an almost invisible strength, where physically challenging moves and sequences are made to look effortless and graceful. Taking ballet class will improve your posture, physical coordination, mental strength and focus and flexibility.

Please contact the office for which grade depending on age/experience

Tap

Tap dance gives us the opportunity to make our own music, we have our very own instruments that are dying to be played – our feet!! Tap dance enables us to explore various music genres, speeds and tempos and play around with different rhythms.

Tap dance encourages a love of music and keeps our brains highly active as we put together different step combinations, we need to learn how to quickly shift our weight from foot to foot and it can also be a fantastic cardio workout. There is nothing more beautiful to listen to that a rhythmical tapper making music with their feet.

Please contact the office for which grade depending on age/experience.

Modern

Modern Theatre dance is a rhythmic dance style which is often seen on the stages of musical productions and is known for its theatrical qualities. The style uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns which all need strength, flexibility, and control. This is a highly energetic dance style and one which is required to be a well-rounded technical dancer.

Please contact the office for which grade depending on age/experience.

Senior Jazz

Jazz is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps, quick turns, and high kicks. To excel in Jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.

Flexibility and strength are very important for a jazz dancer and these are a key focus in this class. The students will be taught various routines and, in some classes, can develop their own choreographic skills.

We cover all styles of Jazz, from Fosse to Technical Jazz, Musical Theatre to Blues Jazz.

Young Performers Academy

Musical Theatre for 6+ Years

At YPA our mission is simple: we want to build confidence in our students, provide performance opportunities for them to shine, educate them on musicals and the arts and of course build their skill set in dance, drama and singing.

As well as weekly classes in these 3 subjects they will also learn many life skills at YPA. From teamwork and supporting your friends to having to learn lines or an audition and perform when it counts. If a student has the desire to perform and be on the stage but does not yet have the confidence, we can work with them and nurture them with our team of approachable teachers to ensure they soon start thriving in our classes and cannot wait to get on that stage in front of an audience.

Most of all YPA is a massive amount of FUN, where children make new friends outside of school, socialise, be creative and have a safe space to express themselves freely.

Senior Street Dance

Street dances are dance styles that evolved outside of dance studios in any available open space, such as streets, dance parties, block parties, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs. They are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and the other dancers.

The term ‘street dance’ is an umbrella for the many styles that come under it such as hip hop, break-in, house, popping and locking to name but a few. It is also important to us that we teach our students the history behind each style, where it originated from and why.

Senior Body Conditioning

Our body conditioning classes are for strengthening our students’ bodies. We aim to work on all muscle groups to develop strength and tone and we also work on their stamina in these classes too.

We encourage all our students to take this class, the stronger you are as a dancer the better.

Senior Stretch & Technique

In this class we use a mixture of Alixa Flexibility technique stretches and RADAR technique, both fantastic programmes for improving flexibility.

We stretch the students safely and again ensure all areas of the body are stretched equally. Along with the body conditioning class, this class is extremely important for all dancers, and really helps improve flexibility.

Senior Commercial

Commercial dance is sassy, hard hitting, energetic and a lot of fun, it is mainly seen on stage from dancers with pop artists and on music videos.

It is a mixture of sharp and fluid movements and lots of animated expressions. Commercial is an increasingly popular dance form.

New for September 2022

Senior Lyrical

Lyrical dance is a combination of ballet and jazz dance that often uses music with lyrics to inspire the movements of the dancer. Choreographers use the lyrics from the song to inspire the dance and the result is a style that focuses on strong emotion as well as a more individual approach than some dance styles.

It is also a very precise dance with the dancer’s movements portraying the emotion and story of the song.
