Musical Theatre at SDSD

Our Musical Theatre Department offers dynamic, high-quality training for performers who are passionate about singing, acting, and dance. With a strong focus on creativity, technique, and performance, our classes provide students with the skills and confidence needed to thrive both on and off the stage.

Students are encouraged to develop as well-rounded performers, exploring all aspects of musical theatre in a supportive and inspiring environment. They will build strong foundations in vocal technique, acting, and dance, while also developing stage presence, teamwork, discipline, and self-expression.

Acting

Acting is imaginative and expressive, combining storytelling, character development, movement, and voice. Students will explore a wide range of performance techniques, from improvisation and script work to stage presence and emotional expression.

To excel in acting, performers need confidence, creativity, and strong communication skills. Building focus, teamwork, and self-expression are key elements of this class, helping students grow both on and off the stage.

Students will work on scenes, monologues, and ensemble pieces, while also developing their own creative ideas through improvisation and character exploration. In some classes, they will have the opportunity to devise original performances and strengthen their collaborative skills.

We cover all aspects of acting, from improvisation and characterisation to script interpretation, voice work, and performance techniques for both stage and screen. Students will also explore the differences between acting for stage and acting for screen, learning how to adapt their performance style to suit the situation.

Ensemble Singing

Ensemble Singing teaches students how to sing confidently in a group while combining vocal technique, harmony, and performance skills. Students will explore a wide range of singing styles while developing their voices in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Students will work on a variety of songs, learning how to sing in harmony, interpret lyrics, and perform with expression and confidence. In some classes, they will also have the opportunity to develop their own arrangement and performance ideas, building creativity and teamwork. Breathing, posture, vocal control, and blend are key focuses in this class, helping singers to develop both individually and as part of a group.

We cover many styles of singing, from Musical Theatre and Pop to Jazz, Contemporary, and traditional choral repertoire, giving students a well-rounded and enjoyable vocal experience.
